73 · Al-Muzzammil
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
يَٓا اَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُۙ1
You [Prophet], enfolded in your cloak
قُمِ الَّيْلَ اِلَّا قَل۪يلًاۙ2
Stay up throughout the night, all but a small part of it
نِصْفَهُٓ اَوِ انْقُصْ مِنْهُ قَل۪يلًاۙ3
half, or a little less
اَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْاٰنَ تَرْت۪يلًاۜ4
or a little more; recite the Quran slowly and distinctly
اِنَّا سَنُلْق۪ي عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَق۪يلًاۜ5
We shall send a momentous message down to you
اِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ الَّيْلِ هِيَ اَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَاَقْوَمُ ق۪يلًاۜ6
Night prayer makes a deeper impression and sharpens words––
اِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَو۪يلًاۜ7
you are kept busy for long periods of the day––
وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ اِلَيْهِ تَبْت۪يلًاۜ8
so celebrate the name of your Lord and devote yourself wholeheart-edly to Him
رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لَٓا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَك۪يلًا9
He is Lord of the east and west, there is no god but Him, so take Him as your Protector
وَاصْبِرْ عَلٰى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَم۪يلًا10
patiently endure what they say, ignore them politely
وَذَرْن۪ي وَالْمُكَذِّب۪ينَ اُو۬لِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَل۪يلًا11
and leave to Me those who deny the truth and live in luxury. Bear with them for a little while
اِنَّ لَدَيْنَٓا اَنْكَالًا وَجَح۪يمًاۙ12
We have fetters, a blazing fire
وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا اَل۪يمًا13
food that chokes, and agonizing torment in store for them
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْاَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَث۪يبًا مَه۪يلًا14
on the Day when the earth and the mountains will shake. The mountains will become a heap of loose sand
اِنَّٓا اَرْسَلْنَٓا اِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَٓا اَرْسَلْنَٓا اِلٰى فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًاۜ15
We have sent a messenger to you [people] to be your witness, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh
فَعَصٰى فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَاَخَذْنَاهُ اَخْذًا وَب۪يلًا16
but Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger and so We inflicted a heavy punishment on him
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ اِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ ش۪يبًاۗ17
So if you disbelieve, how can you guard yourselves against a Day that will turn children’s hair grey
اَلسَّمَٓاءُ مُنْفَطِرٌ بِه۪ۜ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَفْعُولًا18
a Day when the sky will be torn apart? God’s promise will certainly be fulfilled
اِنَّ هٰذِه۪ تَذْكِرَةٌۚ فَمَنْ شَٓاءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰى رَبِّه۪ سَب۪يلًا۟19
This is a reminder. Let whoever wishes take the way to his Lord
